Fourth Basic Bossa Nova Phrase Variation

Perhaps more used variation of Partido Alto phrase have syncopated beat 4 in the second measure. This can be constructed by exchanging positions of beat groups 5 and 6 (2 + 3 instead of 3 + 2), resulting in the phrase 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 2, or 1331 using our numbering system, which is then usually played in reverse, just like Partido Alto phrase.

Examples of not revered version of this phrase include Tin Tin Por Tin Tin by João Gilberto form album Amoroso from 1977 and intro to Triste and Wave as played by Antonio Carlos Jobim in recordings from 1967 and 1969 (instrumental version recorded for album Wave and version with Frank Sinatra).

The score below shows opening of É Luxó So by Ary Barroso - Luiz Peixoto as played by João Gilberto on Chega de Saudade album from 1959.

This phrase has been used very often in later recordings by João Gilberto such as Aguas de Março, Falsa Baiana, Eu Vim da Bahia and Izaura on album João Gilberto from 1973 and in most songs from album Brasil from 1981. It has also been used often by Caetano Veloso, for example in Chega de Saudade from Circulado Vivo, in Lealdade from Totalmente Demais and in Chora tua Tristeza from Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta to name a few.
