Fourth Basic Bossa Nova Phrase Variation

Perhaps more used variation of Partido Alto phrase have syncopated beat 4 in the second measure. This can be constructed by exchanging positions of beat groups 5 and 6 (2 + 3 instead of 3 + 2), resulting in the phrase 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 2, or 1331 using our numbering system. This phrase is most often played in reverse, just like Partido Alto phrase. Reversed version is described in the next lesson.

Beats:

The difference between this phrase and the previous one is that the onbeat sequence starts later in the second measure and contains 3 beats only, while the offbeat sequence contains 4 beats.

Examples of this phrase include Pra Que Discutir Com Madame by João Gilberto from Live in Montreux album, Tin Tin Por Tin Tin by João Gilberto form album Amoroso from 1977 and intro to Triste and Wave as played by Antonio Carlos Jobim in recordings from 1967 and 1969 (instrumental version recorded for album Wave and version with Frank Sinatra).
