As the liner note says, The Bonfá Magic is the legendary Brazilian
composer/guitarist's fiftieth album, and the first he's recorded in Brazil
in over 30 years. Accompanied by the top Rio sidemen, he performs some
new originals and reprises some of his old classics, notably Manhã
de Carnaval (from Black Orpheus - Orpheu Negro),
the jazz waltz Sofisticada, Almost in Love (written for Elvis Presley
in 1969) and Menina Flor (previously recorded by Bonfá, Stan
Getz and Jobim in 1963). Named the top instrumental
album in 1991 by several publications in Brazil when it was released there.
The Bonfa Magic will likewise appeal to American fans of his gentle romanticism
and elegant artistry.
