This album was recorded in 1999 as an homage to 40-year's anniversary of the first bossa nova album, recorded by João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1959 and was strongly influenced by João's and Tom's music, but also by other bossa nova pioneers such as Luiz Bonfá and Baden Powell. Opening with classic samba from Lobo-Niltinho Tristeza arranged for two guitars, it brings Jobim's standards Wave and Corcovado arranged in Gilberto-Jobim style with one guitar playing standard João's chords while the other improvises in a pattern similar to Jobim's minimalistic piano solos. Following Um Abraço no Bonfá is almost as authemtic as Gilberto's original, while Apelo follows a track established by Vinicius-Toquinho duet back in 70's. Gisele is two-guitar version of Luiz Bonfá's instrumental and finally Jobim's Retrato em Branco e Preto closes this album presenting immortal music that could have equally been recorded in any time. |
